Estes Park Travel and Transport: Scenic viewTraveling around the Estes Park region has certainly become simpler over the past decade, with reliable bus transport being the cheapest mode of transportation, leading to and from the neighboring Rocky Mountain National Park. Within the town of Estes Park itself, by people simply choose to travel by foot, with the main hotels, shops, restaurants and sights generally being easily reached by walking.

However, most visitors to Estes Park choose to bring or hire a car, since there is simply so much worth exploring in this part of Colorado. Rental cars as the preferred mode of transport are becoming increasingly popular and affordable. If you choose to travel around by bicycle, be aware that away to the main roads, some stretches can be very narrow and winding.

Estes Park is conveniently just down the road from one of the world's biggest airports, Denver International Airport, which lies around 75 miles / 121 km to the southeast. Each year, in excess of 50 million travelers are now using this huge airport, meaning that in the busy summer months, in can become quite chaotic at times. Rental cars provide the easiest way to reach Estes Park and the adjacent Rocky Mountain Park, although there is also a rather good selection of bus transport available, operated by companies such as Ace Express, Colorado Charter Lines, Express Charters, Gray Line of Denver, People's Choice Transportation and also Ramblin Express. Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport (FNL) is nearer, being just under 40 miles / 64 km away, but operates on a much smaller scale, with just one carrier, Allegiant Air, which flies to Las Vegas.

There a a number of handy parking lots close to the center of Estes Park, which are free of charge and just a short walk from the downtown action. Rental cars are the perfect mode of transport, particularly since the following highways are close by:

  • Highway US-34 - heading in an east / west direction are providing travel to Granby, which lies some 62 miles / 100 km to the southwest. The US-34 also connects Estes Park with destinations such as Greeley and Loveland.
  • Highway US-36 - starts alongside the Rocky Mountains National Park and provides travel to Boulder, Brighton, Denver and Lafayette. The US-36 also leads to interstate I-25, and ultimately Colorado Springs

Do bear in mind that some stretches of road will require a small fee. The Trail Ridge Road is one such road, since it travels through an area of the Rocky Mountain National Park, meaning that an entrance fee is necessary. Snowfall can cause problems during the winter months and so of the smaller roads close during this period.

There are a number of different choices available when it comes to local bus transport. Estes Park currently operates a convenient shuttle bus, which is completely free of charge and travels from the Visitor Center, stopping at various locations within the town itself and also around the Rocky Mountain Park. Within the National Park itself, buses also travel to and from Bear Lake and Moraine Park.

Whilst there are no trains running through Estes Park as such, rail transport is available from the Amtrak train station in the nearby city of Denver. Train here travel far and wide, with the east-west California Zephyr regularly running between Chicago and San Francisco.
